On Saturday 14th August 2021, the Environmental Health Unit of the Denkyembour District Assembly facilitated the burial of two (2) additional bodies who were believed to have died from COVID-19 at the District Cemetery in Akwatia.
The burial was preceded by a demarcation exercise at the cemetery to determine the exact portion of the cemetery where the bodies would be buried. The families of the deceased were instructed to dig eight (8) feet into the ground rather than the usual six (6) feet due to health and safety reasons.
The team of Environmental Health Officers who were properly trained to handle COVID-19 deaths undertook the burial together with the families of the deceased. The families were however not allowed to enter the portion of the graveyard demarcated for COVID deaths during the actual burial.
The Environmental Health Officer; Mr. Yaw Akwaa Lartey, used the opportunity to encourage the public to strictly adhere to all the COVID protocols which includes washing of hands with soap under running water, using of alcohol-based hand sanitizer and most importantly, wearing of the face masks
