Denkyembour District AIDS Committee Holds Annual Meeting

On 11th August 2021, the District AIDS Committee in the Denkyembour District held its annual committee meeting in the district assembly’s hall to deliberate on matters on HIV/AIDS within the district. The meeting saw the presence of many stakeholders including a rep from the Christian Council, Youth groups, Civil Society organizations amongst others.

The meeting commenced with an opening prayer and reading of the previous meeting’s minutes. The minutes was then discussed and accepted as a working document for the committee.

The Focal Person for the AIDS committee who double as the Acting Head of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development; Mrs. Mabel Twumwaa Acheampong, presented the state of affairs in regards to HIV/AIDS within the district. She mentioned that the department had embarked on numerous sensitization programs and testing of AIDS in the various communities across the length and breadth of the district. She also presented the number of tests done and the number of positive HIV cases being detected through the tests within the district. She however highlighted a few challenges that were faced in the line of her duty. Highest amongst the challenges were lack of funds for her to carry out sensitization and testing programs and celebration of the World AIDS Day.

The officer in charge for handling HIV/AIDS issues at St. Dominic’s Hospital also made a short presentation on the current condition of people living with HIV/AIDS and the progress of treatment for such people. He stated that, as at July 2021, over 3000 people were on treatment within the district. He also stated that almost all people who tested positive for HIV have been on treatment and the progress and recovery have been very significant.

The District Director for Health; Mr. Daniel Derby also addressed the house. He confirmed to the house that the health directorate is also poised to increase the treatment of HIV within the district. He also informed the house that the district as at July 2021 have some active COVID cases and urged all members to help in the sensitization on the preventive measures of COVID.

The Focal Person for the AIDS committee, Mrs. Mabel Twumwaa Acheampong showed appreciation to all members of the committee and urged all members to help in all ways to help fight HIV within the district.
