Speaking at the ceremony at Akwatia, the DCE, Honourable Seth Ofosu Birikorang, said the Population and Housing Census (PHC) was an indispensable tool required to ensure that good governance and democracy worked for all. He said the census would help the district to plan and implement as well as monitor policies and programmes to improve the district. He also said that the success of the census depended on the commitment and passion they attached to the task given them, adding that a bad census would go a long way to affect the developmental goals of the district and also be a waste of resources.
Mr Patrick Ziddah, the facilitator from the Regional Statistical Service gave a brief presentation on the benefits and key guidelines of the upcoming census exercise. According to Mr Ziddah, the PHC data was critical and a vital source of statistics in the implementation of decentralisation programmes and should be taken with all seriousness. He said that the United Nations recommended that every nation should endeavour to undertake population census every ten years, and now was the time for every individual to be counted.
He stressed on the selection process of enumerators and supervisors that would be employed for the exercise. He stated that officials who will be shortlisted for the activity should not play any political role. He also assured the house that better logistics such as tablets, power banks and motorbikes would be deployed to the district and that proper care should be taken in handling such items. Mr Patrick Ziddah finally urged members of the committee to work hard to ensure successful census in the district after a question and answer session by the committee and other guests.
The closing remarks were given by the District Co-ordinating Director. He expressed his profound gratitude to the members of the committee and all other guests for honouring the invitation. Mr Benjamin Bortey Alabi gave the closing prayer, bringing the meeting to an end at around 2:00 pm.
