Denkyembour District Assembly Inaugurates District Health Committee

On Thursday, 16th December 2021, the Denkyembour District Assembly inaugurated the District Health Committee at the district’s Assembly Hall. The purpose of the committee is to decide on pertinent health issues of the district and provide advice to the District Health Directorate.

The District Chief Executive for the Denkyembour District Assembly, Honourable Seth Birikorang Ofosu, took the committee through the oath of allegiance and swore them into office. The committee consist of the chairman, the District Director for Health services, two representatives from the district assembly, one representative each from the Christian and Muslim Religious groups, two health care personnel in the district one of whom shall be from the private sector, a representative of the traditional councils and two other persons at least one of whom shall be a woman. He then introduced the chairman for the committee and handed over the meeting to the chairman.

The chairman for the committee; Mr. Daniel Appiagyei in his introductory remarks expressed his gratitude to all members for making it for such an important meeting. He stated that the committee should put in all their best in order to promote health issues of the district.

The District Health Director; Mr. Daniel Derby was called to give a presentation to the committee on health issues of the district. He began by giving a brief overview and formation of the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service. He enlightened the members on the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the ministry. He also elaborated on the District Health System and took members through the core mandate of the committee. Major amongst the mandate was to initiate mechanisms for sustainability of community involvement in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation. Also, the committee is responsible for ensuring the involvement of communities in health care management of local facilities at the community level. The committee is also mandated to facilitate the establishment of committees that promote public health care operations at all levels.

He also gave the district health profile of the Denkyembour district. He mentioned that, the district has been further divided into 7 sub districts with only 2 hospitals, 1 ambulance service delivery, 4 health centers, 18 CHPS centers, 68 pharmacies and several traditional and herbal healing centers.

He concluded his presentation with the COVID-19 situation of the district. He mentioned that as at 27th November 2021, the country had recorded 131,137 cases with 129,203 recoveries and 1,224 deaths. Active cases at the period stood at 710 persons. For the district, he mentioned that 1,853 tests have been conducted with 383 positive cases. 368 persons have recovered with 15 deaths occurring within the district. He said that 10,802 first doses and 3,742 second dozes of Astra Zeneca vaccines have been deployed. Also 1,052 first doses of Modena have been deployed within the district. Also 2,047 first dozes of Pfizer have been deployed and the health directorate had begun deployment of 1829 doses of Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

The chairman for the committee in his closing remarks expressed his gratitude to the committee for sitting through the meeting. He also encouraged all members to encourage other people to take the vaccine and help improve health care within the district.
