Denkyembour District Assembly Holds General Assembly Meeting

On Wednesday 20th May 2022, the Denkyembour District Assembly held its first ordinary meeting of the General Assembly for the year 2022 at the District Assembly Hall. The meeting began with an opening prayer at around 9:20 am.
The Presiding Member for the assembly; Honourable Asante Kennedy, called the house to order and gave his opening address. He expressed his gratitude to all assembly members, the Member of Parliament, heads of departments, Nananom and all guests for honouring the invitation. He also appealed to the assembly members to give out their maximum cooperation during the meeting. He then took the house through a discussion on actions taken and recommendations from the previous meeting.
The Regional Manager for Public Utilities Regulatory Commission; Mr Addo was invited to educate the house on the functions of the Commission. He urged all assembly members to take keen interest in duties of the PURC and further educate their electorates especially on water and electricity issues. According to him, Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) was set up as a multi-sectorial regulator by the Government of Ghana in October, 1997 (Act 538) as part of the utility sector reform process to regulate the provision of utility services in the electricity and water sectors. He also mentioned that key objectives of the PURC comprised the provision of guidelines for rates to be changed for the provision of utility services, examination and approval of utility rates, protection of the interest of consumers and providers of utility services and monitoring and enforcement of standards of performance for provision of utility services.
The District Chief Executive for the Denkyembour District; Honourable Seth Birikorang Ofosu was called upon to deliver his sessional address to the house. He began by expressing his gratitude to all members present. He also expressed his deepest gratitude to all assembly members, heads of departments and Nananom for the respective roles they played in his second nomination and confirmation as District Chief Executive.
He centred his address on Finance, Security, Developmental Projects, Education, Health, Agriculture, Community and Social Development and Administrative issues. He stated that a total IGF of Two Hundred and Eleven Ghana Cedis, Nine Hundred and Eighty-Six Ghana Cedis and Forty Eight Pesewas (GHC 211,986.48) was generated for the first quarter of 2022 as against a budgeted amount of Seven Hundred and Eighty-Nine Thousand, One Hundred and Twenty-Seven Ghana Cedis and Fifty Pesewas (GHC 789,127.50) representing 26.8%.
On issues of Agriculture, he mentioned that there had been vaccination and Prophylactic treatment of animals against Newcastle disease which saw about 12800 birds been vaccinated. There was also vaccination on fowl pox for about 2000 birds.
On Education, a Common Core Programme (CCP) was organised to train all Junior High Schools Teachers in the District while monitoring and supervision exercise was organised by SISO’s from 18th January to 4th February in the District. The Directorate also organised a Mobile School Report Cards (MSRC) workshop in February to train all Heads of GALOP Schools. Also, the Directorate went on monitoring to monitor teachers implementing the Translation to English Language (T2E) in the Non-GALOP Schools and also embarked on monitoring of General Assemblies in both GALOP and Non-GALOP Schools for the introduction of quality SPIP (School Performance Improvement Plan).
Lastly, on issues of health, The Honourable District Chief Executive informed the House that, on COVID-19 Cases as at the period under review stands at Nineteen (19) with zero deaths and cumulated cases from 2021 to date stands at Four-Hundred and Twenty-one (421) with 15 deaths, Four Hundred and Six recoveries with no active cases. COVID-19 National Immunization Day (NID) first round was done in February in which Four Thousand, Seven Hundred and Ninety-Nine (4,799) has been given first dose and One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Seventy-Nine (1,979) have taken second dose. One Hundred and Seventeen Boosters have been given while Ninety (90) pregnant women have been vaccinated making a total of 6,985 in the District. He mentioned that the total number of persons vaccinated under the routine vaccination and NID under the period under review stands at 15, 762 with 6,595 have been fully vaccinated. Hence, the total number of people vaccinated in the District stands at 41,058.
He then presented the report from the Executive Committee and reports from the seven sub-committees of the assembly.
