The Executive Committee of the Denkyembour District Assembly held its first statutory meeting for the year 2025 on Wednesday, 3rd July 2025, at the District Assembly Conference Hall. The meeting was chaired by Hon. Umar Ahmed, the District Chief Executive in accordance with the provisions of the Local Governance Act. The purpose of the meeting was to consider and deliberate on recommendations submitted by the various sub-committees of the Assembly and to make appropriate recommendations to the General Assembly for final approval.
In attendance were the chairpersons of all seven sub-committees of the Assembly, namely Sports and Culture; Environmental Health and Mining; Finance and Administration; Development Planning; Works; Social Services; and Justice and Security. Each chairperson took turns to present the outcomes of their respective sub-committee meetings, including the key recommendations proposed for consideration by the Executive Committee.
Among the most notable recommendations discussed was the creation of an Art Village within the district. This initiative is intended to promote cultural preservation and tourism while aligning with the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy. The Art Village, once established, is expected to serve as a center for creativity, economic activity, and talent development, especially among the youth. Another important issue brought to the fore was the growing menace of drug and substance abuse within the district. The Executive Committee took serious note of this concern, particularly the increasing rate of youth involvement in narcotics. The Justice and Security Sub-Committee recommended intensified sensitization campaigns, stronger community surveillance, and collaboration with the security services and schools to tackle this threat. The committee unanimously agreed that addressing this issue would require urgent, cross-sectoral attention.
Revenue generation was also a key topic during the meeting. The Finance and Administration Sub-Committee reported on the need to improve internal revenue mobilization. Strategies such as updating the database of ratable properties, enforcing payment compliance, and introducing digital payment platforms were recommended. These measures are aimed at boosting the district’s financial capacity to undertake developmental projects.
Furthermore, the Works Sub-Committee presented a recommendation to designate a specific area as a lorry park for the people of Topremang and surrounding communities. The absence of a formal transport terminal has been a long-standing challenge, affecting both mobility and local commerce. The Executive Committee endorsed the recommendation and directed the Works Department to conduct a feasibility assessment to determine a suitable site for the project.
Other matters discussed included improving social service delivery, strengthening school infrastructure, enhancing community health services, and intensifying security patrols in identified hotspots. The need for inter-departmental collaboration and community involvement in project planning and implementation was emphasized by several members.
In his closing remarks, the Chairman, Hon. Umar Ahmed, commended the sub-committee chairpersons for their hard work and commitment. He reiterated the Assembly’s dedication to ensuring that all recommendations are thoroughly reviewed and presented to the General Assembly for adoption. He also urged members to continue working diligently towards the development of the Denkyembour District.
