Denkyembour District Assembly Holds Farmers Day Celebration

On Friday, November 8, 2024, the Denkyembour District Assembly organized the 40th National Farmers Day Celebration, held at the Presbyterian Primary School Park in Boadua. This important annual event, which celebrates the contributions of Ghanaian farmers and fishers, took place under the theme, “Building Climate Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security.” The occasion was graced by notable dignitaries, including traditional leaders, government officials, and representatives of various agricultural and research institutions, highlighting the significance of the day to the district and the nation at large.

The event saw the attendance of a wide array of prominent figures within the district, reinforcing the importance of agriculture to the socio-economic development of the region. Distinguished guests included Osabarima Owusu Nketia II – Chairman for the occasion and chief of Akyem Takrowase, Honorable Seth Birikorang Ofosu – The District Chief Executive of Denkyembour District, Honorable Henry Boakye Yiadom – Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency, Mr. Seth Yeboah – District Director for Agriculture, Madam Tettehki Kpekpena – District Manager for the Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED) and Dr. Isaac Danso – Manager of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Oil Palm Research Institute (CSIR-OPRI). Also in attendance were chiefs and elders, assembly members, heads of departments and institutions, representatives from agricultural institutions, the press, award recipients, and members of the general public.

The ceremony was filled with insightful speeches from key stakeholders. Each address highlighted the day’s theme and the importance of building climate-resilient agricultural practices to ensure food security. Notable speeches were presented at the ceremony

Osabarima Owusu Nketia II, the chairman for the occasion, in his opening remarks welcomed all participants to the ceremony. He also expressed his gratitude to management of Denkyembour District Assembly for appointing him as the chairman for the occasion. He encouraged young people to see agriculture as a viable and rewarding career path.

District Director for Agriculture, Mr. Seth Yeboah highlighted ongoing district initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity, particularly through farmer education programs on best practices in sustainable farming. He applauded the farmers for their resilience in facing challenges like changing weather patterns and noted how these efforts align with national policies to secure food resources.

Madam Tettehki Kpekpena, District Manager for CHED, focused on the importance of sustainability in cocoa production. She shared insights on CHED’s programs to educate cocoa farmers on environmentally friendly practices, such as reducing pesticide use and adopting agroforestry techniques, which are key in achieving climate-resilient agriculture.

Dr. Isaac Danso, Manager of CSIR-OPRI, shared his institution’s latest research findings and innovations in crop breeding, pest control, and soil management. He emphasized the need for adaptive techniques to overcome challenges posed by climate change and pledged his organization’s continued support to farmers in the district.

Honorable Seth Birikorang Ofosu, District Chief Executive, reiterated the district’s dedication to supporting farmers through initiatives like providing subsidized farm inputs and improving access to credit facilities. He noted the district’s commitment to developing road infrastructure, making it easier for farmers to transport their produce to markets.

Honorable Henry Boakye Yiadom, Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency, praised the contributions of farmers to the national economy. He outlined government efforts to empower farmers by ensuring they receive the necessary resources and training, emphasizing a focus on youth involvement in agriculture as a solution to employment challenges.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to outstanding farmers who had demonstrated excellence in various agricultural sectors. These awards recognized innovation, productivity, and dedication to sustainable practices. The top award of District Best Farmer was presented to Mr. Asamoah Bonti, an exemplary farmer whose achievements set a high standard for others in the district. Other awards were presented to farmers in specific categories such as best vegetable farmer, best crop farmer, best animal farmer, best woman farmer, best youth farmer, best root and tuber crop farmer, best disability farmer amongst others..

Each awardee received prizes, including farming equipment, fertilizers intended to further support their efforts and inspire other farmers in the community. The awards segment underscored the Assembly’s commitment to motivating farmers and recognizing their vital contributions to the local economy.

The 40th National Farmers Day celebration in the Denkyembour District highlighted the essential role of agriculture in sustaining the region’s economy and emphasized the importance of adopting climate-resilient agricultural practices.
