Justice and Security Sub-Committee Meeting of the Denkyembour District Assembly

On Thursday, 20th October 2022, the Justice and Security Sub-committee of the Denkyembour District Assembly held a meeting to deliberate on the issues of security within the district.
Chairman for the sub-committee Honourable Ahmed Yusif Yonah welcomed members for taking time of their busy schedule to attend the meeting. He quickly tasked the secretary to take members through minutes from previous meeting for necessary corrections and deliberations which was accepted as a working document afterwards. Major issues arising from the previous minutes as discussed by members were the presence of terrorist groups in the country, rise of drug use among youths in the district, regulation of the activities of entertainment centres and overcrowding of sign post at vantage points.
The chairman of the meeting Honourable Ahmed Yusif Yonah after his open remarks stated that there was no particular agenda for the meeting and that he wanted the committee members to discuss the updates so far on the issues that were raised during the previous meeting.
Regarding the matters arising, representative from the District Police Service stated that, most of the people involved in drug use had been remanded and some are were still in custody awaiting trial at court and that they were still on the lookout for people who engage in the activity.
Another major issue discussed by members was the misconduct of some students of Akwatia Technical Institute. Members were informed that owners of Hostels where some of these students reside met with Management on the matter and were recommended that students who were caught involved in such misconduct should be arrested and dealt with by the law accordingly.
Regarding the provision of motorbikes and fuel to Security Service, The Sub-Committee members stated that, they met with the co-ordinating Director who gave the assurance that letters had been sent to fuel stations and other relevant stakeholders but were yet to hear from them.
There were concerns on the use of illegal drugs within the district. Members of the sub-committee mentioned that these acts were going on across the length and breadth of the country and that drastic measures should be taken to curb this menace. The security agencies also complained about their mobility to carry out these activities and pleaded to the assembly to provide motorbikes for them.
At the end of the meeting, the sub-committee recommended that streetlights be provided for selected communities within the district. Also, it was recommended that motorbikes be provided for the security agencies within the district to help them in monitoring exercise.
The chairman in his closing remarks expressed his gratitude to all members for attending the meeting and mentioned that all recommendations would be carried to the Executive Committee.
